Years ago, in Frankenmuth, there were complaints about two crosses on a bridge in town. A request was made to have them removed, so the city removed them. Following the success of this request a demand was made that the city shield also be changed. It had, along with other symbols, a heart with a cross inside, signifying the city’s Christian beginnings. At this point hundreds of residents of Frankenmuth made their opinions known by placing various size crosses in their front yards showing the solidarity of the community. This was a quiet but powerful statement that led to the request of the change in the shield to be withdrawn.
It’s tempting as Christians to live under the radar. Our neighbors may know our names, and even consider us good neighbors and good people, but do they know the most important thing for them to know about us? Do they know we belong to Jesus?
This cross is a quiet, non aggressive witness of our faith in Christ as Savior and Lord. It is a simple way for us to publicly own our faith in Christ and declare to the world that Jesus is our Lord and King. Perhaps it will even be a catalyst for your neighbors to ask you the reason for your faith, and the hope that you have.
Plant a cross in your front yard or garden for all to see and then be a good neighbor “so that we may make the truths about our God and savior attractive in every way” (Titus 2:10)
